Huawei Contributes to ITU-T Release of G.fast Broadband Standard – Dec 22, 2014– Shenzhen, China (Techreleased) – ITU-T this month has approved the G.fast broadband standard, a milestone in G.fast standardization. Huawei has played a pivotal role in the development of G.fast standards and products since 2011, which are designed to deliver access speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s over copper wires, enabling rapid deployment of ultra-broadband networks without the need for fiber to the home (FTTH) deployment.

The proposals contributed by Huawei to the ITU-T G.fast standardization committee cover a wide range of G.fast core technologies, including time division duplex (TDD), basic frame structure, forward error correction (FEC) channel coding, line activation negotiation mechanism, multi-line crosstalk cancelation, online reconfiguration, and power-saving working mode.

Huawei’s key milestones in the development of the G.fast standard include:

  • February 2014: Huawei conducted the industry’s second G.fast trial with TeliaSonera in Northern Europe, verifying the compatibility between G.fast and ADSL2+/VDSL2. To date, Huawei has carried out G.fast lab tests with more than 15 operators, conducted G.fast trials with four operators, and signed the industry’s first ever G.fast commercial contract with a top European operator.
  • October 2013: Huawei overcame technical barriers, and began to gear up for G.fast commercialization by conducting the industry’s first ever G.fast trial with BT, catalyzing G.fast readiness for commercial use and accumulating extensive engineering experience.
  • August 2013: Huawei launched the industry’s first multi-port G.fast product prototype supporting IP68 waterproofing.
  • November 2011: Huawei unveiled the industry’s first G.fast technical prototype, demonstrating the feasibility of ultra-high-speed gigabit access over one twisted pair.
Mr. Jeff Wang, President, Huawei Access Network Product Line, stated, “The release of the G.fast broadband standard is of great significance within the industry and we are honored to have contributed to the release of this standard. Copper wires are important resources for fixed network operators, and the combination of copper reuse and innovative G.fast technologies speeds up access, deployment, and ROI for operators. G.fast is an ideal alternative solution to enable gigabit access when FTTH deployment is not feasible, and enables operators to realize quick ultra-broadband deployment for added business success.”

Huawei continuously innovates within the copper access domain, and has launched innovative vectoring and G.fast technologies and products. For example, SuperVector is the recent outcome of Huawei’s research in ultra-high-speed copper access and is a Huawei-developed technology that can triple the copper line access speed on outdoor cabinet sites without the need for network restructuring.

Huawei is committed to promoting the standardization and productization of new technologies and will continue to play an active role in achieving cooperation across the industry chain, setting development trends for ultra-high bandwidth networks, and providing an immersive and fully-connected communications experience for end users.
