Posted On October 17, 2018Toshiba And Nea Conclude Understanding Of Autonomous Hydrogen Energy Supply Systems – Oct 17, 2018 – Manila, Philippines (Techreleased) – Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Toshiba ESS) today announced that it has concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with National Electrification Administration (hereinafter referred to as NEA), an government organization of the Philippines, on the implementation of H2One™, hydrogen based autonomous energy supply system with renewable energy and the use of hydrogen as a fuel for power generation in the Philippines. Under the MOU, Toshiba ESS and NEA will study the installation site, the optimum system specifications in the Philippines, and the operation system, including maintenance.
In the Philippines, half of the current energy supply is comprised of coal and oil-fired thermal power. The country is also reliant on imports of these fuels, and increasingly sees renewable energy as a chance to improve the self-sufficiency of its energy supply. The country seeks solutions for remoted islands with low electrification rates, and ways to reduce risk from typhoons and other natural disasters.
H2One™ is an integrated system that uses a renewable energy source to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen, and stores and uses the hydrogen in fuel cells to provide stable delivery of CO2-free, environmentally-friendly electricity and hot water. One of the application of H2One™ is the “Off-grid solution,” which can help realize a sustainable society. This is a distributed energy system that allows the supply of clean and stable energy, without influence from the weather, to islands currently reliant on diesel and other generating systems such as thermal power.
Fumio Otani, Corporate Senior Vice President, who is responsible for the hydrogen business of Toshiba ESS said, “I’m confident that our expertise and know-how as a leading supplier of integrated energy solutions will help realize a sustainable society with distributed energy resources for each island.”
Toshiba ESS has been conducting a survey project to develop applications for the H2One™ in remot islands in the Philippines and Indonesia, which was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in this month. Toshiba ESS has already reached a partnership agreement with Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi, an Indonesian government organization, for the spread of H2One™, throughout Indonesia. MOU with NEA will accelerate business considerations for solutions to energy-related challenges in the Philippines.
