Boeing has won a $1.9 billion contract to produce 184 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for the US Army and international customers, including the first Apaches for Australia. The contract, which brings the total current funded value of the project to $2.1 billion, has the potential to increase to more than $3.8 billion with future obligations.
According to Christina Upah, vice president of Attack Helicopter Programs and senior Boeing Mesa site executive, “We are enhancing the US Army’s attack fleet, while supporting additional partner nations and welcoming our newest Apache customer, the Australian Army. This contract highlights the need for Apaches worldwide.”
Under the terms of the deal, the US Army will receive 115 remanufactured Apaches, with an additional 15 Apaches to be procured as options. The remaining 54 aircraft will be delivered to partner nations as part of Foreign Military Sales. Boeing Global Services will continue to deliver optimal readiness for the warfighter, including training devices, spare provisions, support and test equipment kits, depot support, field engineering, and technical manuals.
Col. John (Jay) Maher, U.S. Army Apache project manager, stated, “This multi-year contract is critical for the warfighter and the entire Apache team. It demonstrates the Army’s commitment to continue putting unmatched capability into the hands of our nation’s finest, while providing stability and predictability for the outstanding citizens and companies that pour their talent into producing the best attack helicopter in the world.”
The AH-64E Apache, built at the Boeing site in Mesa, Arizona, is the most advanced multirole combat helicopter in the world. The aircraft’s weapons system, avionics, and digital communications have been significantly improved, providing better situational awareness, cognitive decision-making, and lethality.
The announcement of this contract comes on the heels of the US Army’s Apache fleet surpassing five million flight hours, a milestone proving the AH-64 is the most capable, reliable, and versatile attack helicopter. There are currently over 1,275 Apaches in operation around the world.
Boeing has been a leading provider of military helicopters to the US and its allies for over 70 years. The company’s portfolio includes the Apache, Chinook, and Osprey rotorcraft, which serve a range of missions, including combat, transport, and search and rescue.
Boeing has also been investing heavily in new technologies and capabilities to maintain its position as a leader in the defense industry. The company has developed advanced autonomous systems, hypersonic weapons, and space technologies, and is working on the next generation of fighter jets.
This contract demonstrates Boeing’s commitment to delivering the most advanced military rotorcraft to the US Army and its allies. The AH-64E Apache is a critical component of the US Army’s attack fleet and is relied upon by partner nations around the world. This deal will provide stability and predictability for the Apache team and the suppliers and contractors that support the program. With this contract, Boeing is well-positioned to continue providing the world’s most capable and reliable attack helicopters for years to come.
