Winter is hard on vehicles. The cold, the snow, the ice, it can play havoc on engines, wheels, and windows. If you go into winter unprepared, you can start to face all sorts of problems ranging from your car not starting, to ending up in an accident!
So let’s talk through some ways you can protect yourself:
Take Care of the Battery
Cold weather plays havoc on batteries, and it’s very common for batteries to just run out of juice during the winter and your car not starting in the morning. If you make regular, even daily long journeys in your car (half an hour’s drive or more), then that may be enough to keep your battery fully charged and avoid many of the problems you may experience.Whereas if you tend to do shorter journeys, or even go days without using your car, one morning, it just won’t start. Make sure you have a battery charger, and apply it regularly so that your car’s battery stays topped up. This will help avoid any problems with your car not starting, even if you go weeks without using it.
Your Car Hates Salt!
If the salt (and grit) applied to roads gets on, under, or in your car, it can cause any number of problems. So even when there’s ice on the windshield, you may want to give your car a bit of a hose down if there’s any chance salt has landed on it, just to make sure it doesn’t stay on your car for any length of time. And you may want to also use a hose, or a pressure hose if possible, to quickly clean the underside of your car to clear any salt and grit too as if it sticks around too long it can cause issues.

Don’t Forget Your Tires
This is so, so important. Poor quality tires, or tires with reduced grip, can send you skidding across the road when there’s ice and snow about.Before winter really starts to kick in, you’ll want to make sure your tires are in good condition, or, if the winters in your part of the world are severe enough to make this worthwhile, switch over to winter tires, and even make sure you have chains in your car too, just in case you need that extra bit of help.
