Posted On August 15, 2014Huawei FDB Helps Rostelecom’s FTTH Deployment – Aug 15, 2014– Shenzhen, China (Techreleased) – Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, announced today that it will corporate with Rostelecom on Floor Distribution Boxes (FDBs), an innovative and scalable product jointly designed by both parties. Huawei will help Rostelecom deploy flexible fiber to the home (FTTH) FastConnect services.
Rostelecom is the largest fixed network operator in Russia, offering telecom and long-distance transmission services in 8 federal districts across the country. The Russian government has demanded that Rostelecom develop 13 million FTTH users by 2015. With the exception of a few mega-cities, most areas in Russia are sparsely populated, leading to extremely low actual installation rates. To reach 13 million users in two years is a daunting task for Rostelecom particularly because the project requires huge investments and may end with low actual installation rates.
Ensuring high actual installation rates and maximizing return on investment (ROI) is the key pain point experienced by the customer. To help the customer tackle this challenge, Huawei proposed the thin-covered network deployment model. In the preliminary network construction stage, networks are constructed to user access points and FDBs as are deployed as the interface between the outside plant (OSP) and the inside plant (ISP). In future network expansion situations, pre-made drop cables can be used for plug-and-play and quick service provisioning. Backed by this model, Huawei and Rostelecom customized the innovative FDB to meet the requirement.
The FDB was designed in a step-by-step manner to meet different requirements during the different stages of FTTH construction, ensuring that only appropriate investments are made. In the initial stage, Rostelecom can deploy FDBs that provide access to only a single user. As the number of subscribers increases, the FDB can smoothly evolve to support four and even eight users, ensuring quick access of FTTH users. This innovative and flexible way of expansion requires no splicing. Engineers can complete the expansion in one minute without the use of any tools. This FDB solution is particularly applicable to the sparsely populated sections of the Russian territory where the actual installation rate is low and where cold seasons leave only short periods of time for network construction. This solution will help Rostelecom build a flexible and scalable optical distribution network (ODN), improve deployment efficiency, maximize ROI, and cut the total cost of ownership (TCO).
The success of the joint innovation project has strengthened the strategic partnership between Huawei and Rostelecom and has once again displayed Huawei’s strengths in ODN construction. In the future, Huawei and Rostelecom will continue to work on ODN innovation, including the closure, optical splitter, and fiber distribution terminal (FDT). Through further cooperation, Huawei will continue to develop FTTH products and solutions for Rostelecom to help the latter execute its FTTH strategy.
Huawei has always been dedicated to providing the FastConnect ODN solution that supports quick deployment and intelligent management. In October 2010, Huawei launched the first Intelligent Optical Distribution Network (iODN) solution in the industry to enhance management of optical networks which was given the InfoVision Award at the Broadband World Forum (BBWF). iODN standards which were primarily developed by Huawei were also released by ITU-T in November 2012. In 2014, Huawei and Telefonica signed a two-year procurement contract of FastConnect products, helping the latter quickly deploys FTTH in support of Telefonica’s ultra-broadband strategy. In July 2014, Huawei and Rostelecom signed the procurement framework contract of FastConnect FDB. So far, Huawei has deployed over 60 intelligent ODNs around the world.
