OMEGA presents the Seamaster Aqua Terra, 15,000 Gauss watch in Moscow – Jul 11, 2013– Moscow, Russia  (Techreleased) – OMEGA demonstrated its Seamaster > 15,000 Gauss antimagnetic watch at a press conference in the Presidential Hall of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The unique new development was introduced by Stephen Urquhart, OMEGA’s CEO, Jean-Claude Monachon, Vice President and Head of Product Development, and Michel Willemin, CEO of Asulab.

The Seamaster > 15,000 Gauss is one of the most astonishing technological accomplishments in the recent history of the brand. The revolutionary feature of this movement is its resistance to magnetic fields even greater than 1.5 tesla (15,000 gauss), which is considerably higher than for any previous “anti-magnetic”.

“It’s a great honour for OMEGA to present the Co-Axial calibre 8508 – a movement which, for the first time in the history of watchmaking, is capable of fully resolving the global problem of magnetic fields affecting the operation of mechanical watches”, said Mr Urquhart. “More importantly, we’ve succeeded in organizing industrial-scale manufacture of this completely non-magnetic mechanism, which will be used in OMEGA’s Seamaster Aqua Terra > 15,000 Gauss from October 2013 and subsequently in all OMEGA’s Co-Axial watches.”

In contrast to other means of protection against magnetic fields, such as the shield casing, the OMEGA calibre uses silicon and other non-ferrous materials. This unique technology is protected by several patents.

The importance of OMEGA’s innovative development was vividly demonstrated in the presentation by Michel Willemin, who spoke about the powerful daily impact of the magnetic fields that surround us, from mobile phones and tablets, to the magnetic clasp on a lady’s handbag. “As a result of the daily impact of the magnetic fields around us watches begin to lose their accuracy and can even stop,” he explained.

After speakers presented studies to support the research, a demonstration was organised so the media could admire the new Co-Axial calibre 8508 movement.
