Everywhere you look, people are using their smartphones to take pictures, write status updates, share music etc., and all of these actions have a different platform where they end up on: whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify or many others. Wouldn’t it be nice to create something that can combine all of these possibilities into one digital portfolio? Then, say hello to Vycarious; The social media application that allows users the ability to share their “experiences” rather than limited posts, status updates, photos or videos. An experience on Vycarious is documented within a portfolio with a defined start and end date. These portfolios can include short text entries, updates, blog entries, links, songs, videos, pictures or anything that can completely document and express the experience. The followers of these experiences can then receive almost everything needed to live vicariously through their friends’ experiences without actually being there.

Vycarious appThe creators of the Vycarious app believe that your life experiences “shouldn’t be broken up, filtered or shortened.” The app attempts to cut out the clutter of individual snippets and posts from other social media websites. So, for anyone who is curious about what exactly happens during a “backpacking trip through Europe” or “training for the Olympics process”, this may be the closest you can get to experiencing these events without actually being there or going through it yourself. The functionality of the app also seems to be a great solution for close friends to follow each other’s experience in the occasion that they cannot be together to share it in person. Family members who live in different countries or states can use the app to feel closer to each other and keep up-to-date with current events.

Vycarious also has a feature where followers can comment or ask questions about the experience. The app may be the perfect tool for anyone who has ever been nervous or unsure about trying something new. People can now gain confidence and learn from other’s Vycarious experiences. Unfortunately, the app may have a bit of an awkward aspect to it. It would be creepy if an old high school friend or stranger decided to want to follow my weekend getaway or hiking trip.

Vycarious co-founder and CEO Rosalie Bartlett told Fueled.com that an experience can be everything from “growing up in rural Kansas to going on a first date.” That is … if you never want to see the person you are on a date with ever again. Not sure how charming one can be while documenting the entire date. In a society where we are sharing almost every morsel of information about our lives, I remain one of the few believers that there are some things that should stay personal. Therefore, maybe the Vycarious app shouldn’t be used for everything such as first dates, job interviews or honeymoons. Nonetheless, Vycarious does seem to have many positive features if used the right way. Overall, the app looks like a great idea to share useful experiences like DIY moments or trips to foreign countries. Vycarious is currently exclusive to iOS users and is available now in the apple store.
