The self-driving car is an element of science fiction that may soon become reality. The day will come when drivers can relax on the road and let their cars do all of the work. Until this technological marvel becomes widely available to the public, everyone still needs to keep their eyes on the road at all times. This should go without saying, but distracted drivers are causing more and more accidents every year.
Cell phone manufacturers have really outdone themselves. They have created a product that is so engaging, consumers just can’t seem to put them down. This is even true when smart phone users get behind the wheel. Ignoring their responsibilities to operate their vehicles safely, these distracted drivers are presenting an increased danger to themselves and everyone else on the road.
There have been many proposed solutions to this problem. Laws have been written to prohibit the use of portable electronics while driving, and penalties have increased to further discourage the practice. Technological measures have been attempted. Hands free devices make interfaces less distracting, and some have suggested electronic restrictions that make cell phones inoperable in moving cars. Still, texting while driving remains a popular activity.
Until the self-driving car arrives to free drivers of the burden of watching what they are doing, the only truly effective solution for this problem is to change attitudes. Everyone needs to understand the problem and accept personal responsibility for their own behavior.
